Cinder Cone Wilderness is a 16,935-acre protected area in the West Potrillo Mountains of southern New Mexico within Organ Mountains-Desert Peaks National Monument. Managed by the U.S. Bureau of Land Management, it became part of the U.S. wilderness system in 2019. The area is especially notable for its concentration of cinder cones, volcanic landforms that rise from the broader Chihuahuan Desert. Its importance rests in preserving both this unusual volcanic landscape and the surrounding desert ecosystem under stronger federal wilderness protections.
