Aden Lava Flow Wilderness
Nature
Aden Lava Flow Wilderness is a protected federal wilderness area in southern New Mexico, southwest of Las Cruces, within the Potrillo volcanic field. Managed by the Bureau of Land Management, it preserves a stark volcanic landscape centered on the Aden lava flow, with Aden Crater on the flow’s western side. Located south of County Road B002, the area was previously known as the Aden Lava Flow Wilderness Study Area before being designated part of the National Wilderness Preservation System by the John D. Dingell Jr. Conservation, Management, and Recreation Act on March 12, 2019. Its importance lies in safeguarding one of New Mexico’s lava-field landscapes in a largely undeveloped condition.
