Native Americans lived along the lower portion of the Rock River for thousands of years, drawn by abundant fish and wild game and by land that could grow domesticated plants. During the early 1800's, the Sauk lived in villages at and near Prophetstown. Wabokieshiek, White Cloud, "The Prophet" (circa 1790-1841), was an advisor to Black Hawk. This area, known as the Prophet's Village, was burned by Capt. Abraham Lincoln's company during the Black Hawk War, and in 1832 Black Hawk and Wabokieshiek were captured in WI.
