Morrison-Rockwood State Park in Illinois, north of Morrison, encompasses 1,164 acres of wooded land shaped by Rock Creek and its tributaries. Established in 1971 and opened for day use that year, it took its name from nearby Rock Creek and the heavily forested area called Rockwood. Its central feature is Lake Carlton, a watershed impoundment created in 1969 by an earthen dam built across a tributary of Rock Creek. The lake was named for local citizen L. Carlton Anderson, whose efforts to promote the park and civic and conservation leadership helped shape a park defined by both natural features and local advocacy.
