Sunset Bay State Park on the Oregon coast near Charleston and Cape Arago is part of a cluster of coastal parks and is valued for its sheltered crescent beach, tide pools, hiking trails, and year-round campground. The park grew over decades through a county donation, an added parcel with a water supply, and later purchases, exchanges, private transfers, and Bureau of Land Management grants, eventually reaching about 405 acres. Its most unusual feature is a shoreline ghost forest created about 1,200 years ago when a Cascadia subduction zone earthquake dropped the coast and drowned a stand of spruce trees, leaving stumps still visible today.
