Cape Arago Lighthouse was built to guide ships into Coos Bay as that harbor grew into an important West Coast port. After funding in 1864 and the first light in 1866, the station’s harsh Pacific setting repeatedly damaged its structures, prompting repairs, additions, and eventually complete replacements. A stronger second lighthouse was erected in 1909, but erosion later forced construction of a third concrete tower in 1934. The station was automated in 1966, its Fresnel lens was replaced in 1993, and it remained an active beacon until decommissioning in 2006. The 1934 tower is the only surviving structure.
