Life on the farm was difficult for the Garfield family, especially after the untimely death of father Abram Garfield in 1833. They were fortunate, however, to live close to Abram’s half-brother Amos Boynton and his wife, Alpha, Eliza Garfield’s younger sister. The Boyntons lived across Jackson Road, due north from here.
