During most of the 19th century, major roads in Kentucky were maintained by private companies, and travelers paid a fee at a tollhouse to use a company's road. This original tollhouse is typical of the 13 tollhouses that existed on the Maysville-Lexington Turnpike, of which Old Main Street in Washington was a part. The toll schedule charged 2¢ for one person, 4¢ for one mule or horse, 6¼¢ for 10 cows, 6¼¢ for 20 sheep or hogs, 8¢ for a two-wheel cart, 16¢ for a four-wheel carriage, and 25¢ for a stagecoach or work wagon, while funerals and churchgoers paid no charge.
