Calico Peaks form a colorful mountain group in the Calico Mountains of California’s Mojave Desert, just north of Barstow, Yermo, and Interstate 15. Stretching across parts of San Bernardino and Inyo counties, they are significant for both striking geology and deep human history. The highest named summit, Calico Peak, rises to 4,542 feet in San Bernardino County. Around and below the peaks are several notable places, including Rainbow Basin in the Bureau of Land Management’s Rainbow Basin Natural Area, the historic Calico Ghost Town in the Yermo Hills, and the Calico Early Man Site, a prehistoric Native American archaeological site.
