Along West Side Road, Eagle Borax Works, 28 miles away, was the first borax refinery in Death Valley. It operated for only two years, closing in 1884 after refining 150 tons of relatively low-grade borax. Dayton-Harris Graves, 29 miles away, are the graves of good friends Jim Dayton and Shorty Harris. Dayton died in 1899 and Harris in 1934, and these legendary characters are buried next to each other "in the valley we loved."
