Stones Reunited
Science & Tech
Most of the Catoctin Creek Aqueduct collapsed in 1973 after decades of enduring erosion, winter freezing, the battering of floating logs, and the force of floodwaters. Some stones washed downstream and were lost. This outstanding example of early American engineering was restored through the efforts of many individuals and organizations who championed its rebuilding by adopting used stones to reconstruct the aqueduct.
