The Catoctin Aqueduct, completed in 1834, carried canal boats over Catoctin Creek and served the canal until 1924. In the late 1800s, loaded boats passed over it seemingly in midair as mule drivers shouted and water leaked through the old stonework. Boat captains called it "The Crooked Aqueduct" because of the sharp turns they had to negotiate upon entering and exiting. Here, especially between Point of Rocks and Harpers Ferry, the C&O Canal and the B&O Railroad struggled for transporting supremacy, and although the boats are long gone, locomotives still echo through this valley on the same right-of-way.
