Howard "Fritz" Haneman was a lifeguard and swim instructor who helped create the city dock and swimming and diving programs. He was a U.S. Army veteran and served on the Brigantine Board of Education from 1956 to 1967. As city historian, he created the Brigantine Historical Museum. He was director of the Atlantic County Board of Freeholders from 1962 to 1971, president of the Miss America Pageant from 1972 to 1975, and a New Jersey Civil Service Commissioner from 1973 to 1978. A lifetime member of the Atlantic County Board of Agriculture, he also served as president of the Atlantic County Utilities Authority from 1978 to 1990 and was a member of the board of directors of Betty Bacharach Home and Saint Augustine Preparatory School. He was remembered as a businessman, statesman, familyman, and friend.
