Founded in 1933 in Jackson's LeFleur's Bluff State Park, the Mississippi Museum of Natural Science grew from Francis A. Cook's efforts in the 1920s to build support for a state Game and Fish Commission and from his writing of Mississippi's first game laws in 1932. As the largest museum in Mississippi, it combines aquariums, habitat exhibits, and nature trails centered on the state's flora and fauna. It has long served public education and scientific research, especially for schoolchildren and educational institutions. Its collections hold more than a million specimens, and it serves as Mississippi's repository for systematic natural history collections and a center for research, education, and conservation.
