LeFleur's Bluff State Park on the Pearl River in Jackson brings together recreation, natural history, and the origins of Mississippi's capital. Named for Louis LeFleur's late eighteenth-century trading post, the site later became central to the decision in 1821 to place the state government at what became Jackson. The land had originally been part of the Choctaw Nation before the 1830 Treaty of Dancing Rabbit Creek and the removal of many Choctaws west of the Mississippi River. Today the park centers on Mayes Lake and includes camping, fishing, trails, the Mississippi Museum of Natural Science, the Mississippi Children's Museum, and bluffs with fossils from fifty to sixty million years ago.
