Washington Park was officially and formally dedicated by the Dunkirk Bicentennial Commission on July 3, 1976, to remind people of the high ideals of liberty, brotherhood, and democracy that inspired the American Revolution, of the struggles and human sufferings necessary to bring those ideals into reality, and of the responsibility to cherish them and preserve them for future generations.
