Martinsville's oldest public cemetery was established as part of First Episcopal Church on land given by Mr. Marshall Hairston in 1847. Its original location was on the corner of Moss and Church Streets. Around 1885, the church cemetery was condemned and moved to its current location, where it became Martinsville's only public cemetery. The original tract consisted of 8+ acres and was purchased from James Moss Smith for $50 per acre.
