Mayo River State Park
Nature
Mayo River State Park in Henry County, near Spencer, occupies land along the North and South Forks of the Mayo River at the Virginia–North Carolina line, adjoining North Carolina’s park of the same name. Virginia advanced the park after a 2007 feasibility study, added both river segments to the scenic river system in 2008, and began acquiring land in 2009, with later additions expanding its footprint. Public access began in 2022 with a trailhead and a small multi-use trail network. Still early in development, the park represents a cross-border conservation effort that protects a scenic river corridor and connects visitors to the history of the state line.
