In this area, several groups of midwestern emigrants who had escaped the hazards and privations of Death Valley in 1849 sought water from Searles Lake. After discovering that the lake was salty, they turned north and west in despair and, with travail, crossed the Argus and other mountains to reach the settlements of Central and Southern California.
