Gibbon Falls is an 84-foot roadside waterfall on the Gibbon River in northwestern Yellowstone National Park, above Madison Junction on the Grand Loop Road. It entered the written record during the 1872 Hayden Geological Survey through William Henry Jackson’s account, and by the mid-1880s its present name was already standard. Early visitors noted the difficult approach, the white water against dark rock and pines, and views from an older road on the opposite side of the river. The falls also shaped the river’s ecology by blocking upstream fish movement; later introductions of rainbow trout and Arctic grayling turned the upper Gibbon into a productive trout fishery.
