Avalanche Peak is a 10,568-foot mountain in northwestern Wyoming on the border of Yellowstone National Park and the North Absaroka Wilderness. Part of the Absaroka Range, it stands out as a distinct summit above Yellowstone’s high country. The mountain is known for its large scree-covered bowl and sweeping views over Yellowstone Lake and the surrounding landscape, making it a popular hiking destination. Its name was officially adopted in 1930 by the United States Board on Geographic Names. Avalanche Peak also has a subarctic climate, with long, cold, snowy winters, mild summers, and severe winter temperatures and wind chills that give it a harsh alpine character.
