Mount Langford, a 10,623-foot peak in Yellowstone National Park’s Absaroka Range near Yellowstone Lake, is named for Nathaniel P. Langford, the park’s first superintendent. Its importance is rooted in the Washburn–Langford–Doane Expedition of 1870, when Langford and Lieutenant Gustavus Cheyney Doane climbed the mountain and Langford sketched the first reasonably accurate map of Yellowstone Lake. Henry D. Washburn then named the summit for Langford and a nearby peak for Doane. Although later surveys shifted those names to other peaks and the original summit was briefly renamed Colter Peak, the mountain remains historically linked to Langford’s ascent, writing, and advocacy for Yellowstone’s creation.
