Clay Furnace, built in 1845 by Vincent and Himrod and named for Henry Clay, saw the first successful use of raw bituminous coal in place of charcoal in 1846 and the first successful use of unmixed Lake Superior iron ore in 1856. It was abandoned in 1861, and the site is 2 miles away.
