Bowers Mansion was erected in 1864 by Sandy Bowers and his wife, Eilley Orrum, with the gold and silver from their mine on the Comstock. In 1946 it was purchased by popular subscription and Washoe County as a playground for the children of the state, and it was dedicated in honor of the sons and daughters of Nevada, veterans of World War II.
