Federal forces captured this important Confederate fort eighteen miles west in 1862. To end depredations committed by the Federal garrison, Forrest attacked and captured the fort with a force from his Confederate Cavalry Corps. Of the garrison of 551 white and Negro troops, 221 were killed, and the rest, some wounded, were captured.
