Petroglyphs
History
1
Petroglyphs etched into a large bedrock outcrop at the foot of the slope preserve messages from the past whose exact meaning remains unknown. Indian rock carvings are found throughout the Western Hemisphere, and Indians living today deny any knowledge of their meaning. Several images here are recognizable, including bighorn sheep, lizards, the sun, and human-like figures, and they may reflect clan symbols, hunting stories, or messages to others passing through the region. Nearby, Klare Spring, created by the Titus Canyon fault directing underground water to the surface, produces 20 gallons a minute and forms a small wetland before disappearing into sand and gravel. In the dry wash, this lush vegetation must have been important to the creators of these petroglyphs.
