This area was originally the cooling pond for the operation of the Caspian Mine. Water used to cool the engines that ran the mine equipment was pumped to this open pond, cooled, and sent back to cool the equipment. After the mine closed, the area became a fountain, an orchestra pit for concerts, and later a garden.
