Oregon Islands National Wildlife Refuge preserves a long chain of offshore islands, rocks, reefs, and two headlands along the Oregon coast. Established in 1935 and expanded over time, it includes important sites such as Haystack Rock and Coquille Point. Its greatest significance is as a major sanctuary for seabirds: thirteen nesting species and more than 1.2 million birds use these colonies, including especially large numbers of common murres, along with puffins, auklets, gulls, and terns. The refuge also protects harbor seals and sea lions, including especially important breeding areas for Steller sea lions. Strict access limits help shield these vulnerable wildlife habitats from disturbance and pollution.
