On April 6, 1865, Confederate and Union soldiers fought with great honor and perseverance in the surrounding hills during the Battles of Sailors Creek, the last major battle of the Civil War in Virginia. In the three engagements at Hillsman's Farm, Marshall's Crossroads, and Lockett's Farm (Double Bridges), each regiment participated with valor and fraternity. Total casualties, including killed, wounded, missing, and captured, were 442 for U.S. forces and 3,400 for Confederate forces at Hillsman's Farm, 172 for U.S. forces and 2,600 for Confederate forces at Marshall's Crossroads, and 536 for U.S. forces and 1,700 for Confederate forces at Lockett's Farm.
