On April 6, 1865, Confederate and Union soldiers fought three engagements in the surrounding hills with great honor and perseverance in what was the last major battle of the Civil War in Virginia. At Hillsman's Farm, Union losses were 442 and Confederate losses were 3,400; at Marshall's Crossroads, Union losses were 172 and Confederate losses were 2,600; and at Lockett's Farm, also called Double Bridges, Union losses were 536 and Confederate losses were 1,700. These totals include killed, wounded, missing, and captured. During the fighting, General R. E. Lee exclaimed, "My God! Has the army been dissolved?" and each regiment participated with valor and fraternity.
