Smoot Peace Park and Veterans Memorial in Belton includes Peace Park, where peace is expressed as love, labor, leisure, light, and law, and a memorial to Mr. and Mrs. G. W. Smoot given to the City of Belton by their daughter Cynthia Smoot Jones in 1956. The site is dedicated to those who served in the Armed Forces of the United States and honors the courage, honor, patriotism, and sacrifice of all men and women who serve, while mourning those who gave their lives to preserve and defend liberty and affirming that freedom is not free. It is also dedicated to true American heroes, including prisoners of war, whose suffering, bravery, courage, and steadfastness continue to inspire, and those missing in action, whose fate may never be known but whose service and sacrifice will not be forgotten. Through the generosity and compassion of local businesses and civic organizations, a fountain there is dedicated to POW-MIAs and their families, and the site affirms the importance of treasuring the nation's history and the ultimate sacrifices made by earlier generations.
