Applewood Estate in Flint, Michigan, was the home of industrialist and philanthropist Charles Stewart Mott and later became a preserved botanical garden and historic estate. Developed beginning in 1916 on land acquired from J. D. Dort and William C. Durant, it included a Jacobethan Revival house designed by Herbert E. Davis and landscaped grounds planned by William Pitkin Jr. The estate was first operated as a gentleman’s farm, later discontinued, and some land was donated to expand what is now Mott Community College. Closely tied to Mott’s long civic and industrial career, Applewood is significant for both its architecture and its association with one of Flint’s leading figures.
