Denton County Courthouse-on-the-Square, built in 1896 in the center of Denton, Texas, served as the county’s courthouse and remains a defining landmark on the public square. Constructed by Tom Lovell, it is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and also contains the final resting place of John B. Denton, for whom the city and county were named. The building now houses a museum interpreting Denton County’s history and culture through exhibits on African American and Hispanic heritage, farming, Southwest American Indian and local pottery, and domestic arts. Its grounds also held a Confederate monument installed in 1918 and removed in 2020 after decades of protest.
