Trial Islands Lighthouse stands on Trial Island in British Columbia’s Strait of Juan de Fuca and is widely recognized as Victoria’s landmark lighthouse. Established in 1906, the station originally used a fourth-order Fresnel lens before a new tower replaced the first lighthouse in 1970. The retired lens was later displayed at the Maritime Museum of British Columbia and then placed in Coast Guard storage. Still operated by the Canadian Coast Guard with two full-time lightkeepers, the lighthouse became part of national debate over staffing, surviving a proposed move to automation. Its heritage value was formally recognized in 2015, with its prominent setting and well-balanced design cited as defining features.
