The California State Indian Museum in Midtown Sacramento, next to Sutter’s Fort, presents the cultures of California’s Indigenous peoples with an emphasis on both deep history and living communities. Its wide scope reflects a Native population before European contact estimated at more than 500,000 people in over 150 tribal groups speaking at least 64 languages. Opened in 1940 from earlier collections, it evolved from object display toward themed, tribally informed exhibits organized around Nature, Spirit, and Family. Its holdings include exceptional baskets, a redwood dugout canoe, regalia, beadwork, and ancient tools, while exhibits on Ishi, California Elders, and community life stress both loss and continuity.
