Green Animals Topiary Garden is a seven-acre estate in Portsmouth, Rhode Island, overlooking Narragansett Bay and regarded as the oldest and northernmost topiary garden in the United States. Bought in 1872 by Thomas E. Brayton as a summer retreat, it was transformed under superintendent Joseph Carreiro, who worked there from 1905 to 1945 and began the first topiaries in 1912. Over time, hand-shaped shrubs and hedges turned the grounds into a notable display of animal and geometric forms. Alice Brayton later renamed the estate Green Animals, and after her death in 1972 she left it to the Preservation Society of Newport County, which still maintains its gardens, greenhouse, and house.
