Fortifications erected by the British in 1777 were occupied by the Americans in 1778 and became the island base of the Continental Army under General Sullivan in the Battle of Rhode Island. On August 29, 1778, brave men there withstood the assaults of the more numerous, highly trained British Army under General Pigot.
