Nicholas Mountain, also called Irons Mountain, is a mountain in western Maryland. Rising in Allegany County, it extends northeast from the North Branch Potomac River for about six miles and ends about three and a half miles southeast of Cumberland. The mountain reaches an elevation of one thousand seven hundred sixty feet. Its alternate name and its position above the Potomac valley near Cumberland reflect the rugged ridge-and-valley landscape that characterizes this part of Maryland.
