Discovered by Dr. William Ford in the early 1800s, Chalybeate Springs became famous for supposed healing powers, and the Chalybeate Springs Hotel offered dancing, dining, horse racing, golf, tennis, and fox hunting. Andrew Jackson is said to have visited often after his presidency. Popular for more than 100 years, the resort closed during World War II. Nearby mineral springs had also attracted pioneer long hunters, whose campsite became the site of Chameleon Springs Hotel in 1804. That summer resort featured five different mineral waters and many activities, operated until the early 1930s, and was the setting for an 1825 meeting at Bryan's Tavern that formally established Edmonson County.
