Late in September 1861, USA Gen. William T. Sherman established headquarters here with 4,000 troops to secure Muldraugh's Hill against an anticipated Confederate advance toward Louisville and to rally Kentuckians to the Union cause. CSA Gen. Simon B. Buckner took Bowling Green and established a Confederate line across Kentucky, but failed to push north. No major action occurred.
