Early in 1908, F.P. Hosp and Partners planted 40,000 eucalyptus seedlings to create this grove, hoping to meet the Santa Fe Railroad's need for wood for railroad ties. After a citizen vote in 1987, the City of Carlsbad acquired 53 acres of the grove. Combined with previously dedicated parkland, a total of 74 acres known as Hosp Grove remains today as parkland and open space. The 5.5 acres on this site were dedicated in December 1995.
