Agua Hedionda Lagoon in Carlsbad, California, is a coastal lagoon fed by Agua Hedionda Creek and valued for both habitat and recreation. Designated critical habitat for the tidewater goby in 2000, it is publicly accessible for passive shoreline use and also supports boating, fishing, and other water activities under rules meant to protect wildlife. Its modern history has been shaped by regular dredging since 1954, which opened and maintains its connection to the Pacific Ocean, improves tidal circulation, and supplies sand to nearby beaches. Dredging has also supported local aquaculture, while the Discovery Center has added education about the lagoon’s natural and cultural history.
