The Navesink Highlands overlook the major shipping channels in and out of New York Harbor, and from two hundred feet above the ocean they offer unobstructed visibility on a clear day for twenty-two miles to the horizon. This vantage point was one reason the original Navesink Highlands Light Station was built here in 1828. Visible landmarks from this location include Lower New York Harbor, Old Orchard Shoal Lighthouse, West Bank Lighthouse, Former Shoal Lighthouse, U.S. Navy Station Earl in Sandy Hook Bay, the Verrazano Narrows Bridge connecting Staten Island to Brooklyn, Coney Island, Jersey City, the Statue of Liberty, the Empire State Building in Manhattan, John F. Kennedy International Airport, Long Island, Ambrose Light Tower, the Atlantic Ocean, two U.S. Coast Guard stations at Sandy Hook, Fort Hancock, Sandy Hook Lighthouse, Spermaceti Cove Visitor Center, Seabright, the Highlands Bridge over the Shrewsbury River, and Highlands.
