Twin Lights served as more than a lighthouse in a strategic location where Marconi demonstrated wireless telegraph, the U.S. Navy established a wireless station, and the U.S. Army tested radar units. The Navy's Bureau of Equipment, responsible for creating wireless radio stations for communication with Navy ships, established its own station here in 1902 after failing to reach an agreement with Marconi to use his equipment. By 1907 the Navy station had been abandoned, and the building was bought by the Postal Telegraph Company, which moved it off the lighthouse grounds and attached it to an existing telegraph watchtower to house its telegraph keeper, who reported ships passing into and out of New York Harbor to company clients. From 1932 until 1939, engineers and scientists from Fort Monmouth in Eatontown, N.J., tested radar and other electronic detection devices here, and in November 1939 they used radar units to follow a flight of B-17 bombers over Long Island, N.Y., across a distance of 138 miles.
