Oakland Harbor Light began as a lighthouse at the entrance to Oakland Harbor, guiding traffic along a busy waterfront. A first tower built in 1890 quickly suffered from failing wooden pilings, leading to construction of a larger replacement on concrete pilings in 1902; that new light entered service in 1903. It remained active until 1966, when automation replaced it. The building later passed into private ownership and was moved to Embarcadero Cove, opening in 1984 as Quinn's Lighthouse Restaurant. Its history reflects Oakland’s shift from working harbor infrastructure to adaptive reuse while preserving the familiar form of a light station.
