Just north of the road at old Sycamore Church, Wade Hampton, coming from the south, attacked the Union cavalry guarding Grant's beef cattle on September 16, 1864. The Unionists were overpowered, and Hampton rounded up 2,500 beeves and escaped with them across the Blackwater and into Lee's lines.
