Snake River Canyon is a river-cut canyon in western Wyoming south of Jackson Hole, carved by the Snake River between the Hoback area and Alpine. U.S. 89 runs through it, making the canyon an important route across this rugged landscape. At its southern end, Alpine stands where the Snake, Greys, and Salt rivers come together at Palisades Reservoir on the Wyoming-Idaho border. The canyon is also known for rafting, including some of the strongest white-water runs in the United States. Its rock walls reveal a fold and thrust belt formed when the North American Plate pushed against the Farallon Plate, creating the folded and faulted formations seen there today.
