At Newark Liberty International Airport in Newark, New Jersey, the Newark Metropolitan Airport Buildings preserve part of Newark Metropolitan Airport, which opened in 1928 and is widely regarded as the first major airport in the United States. The surviving group includes the Administration Building, the Brewster Hangar, and the Medical Building, all designed in the Art Deco style and built in 1934, then dedicated in 1935 by Amelia Earhart. Added to state and federal historic registers in 1980, they are rare remnants of one of the nation’s earliest large-scale airfields and recall Newark’s important role in the rise of commercial aviation.
