ʻIolani Palace
History
1
ʻIolani Palace in downtown Honolulu was the royal residence of the Hawaiian monarchy from 1845 until Queen Liliʻuokalani’s overthrow in 1893, though the site had earlier royal significance near the sacred burial area of Pohukaina. The present palace, commissioned by King Kalākaua and completed in 1882, replaced Hale Aliʻi and became both the monarchs’ official home and the setting for the kingdom’s final political crisis. After the overthrow, the building was seized by the Provisional Government, Liliʻuokalani was imprisoned there in 1895, and the grounds saw major anti-annexation and annexation-era events. Later used as Hawaiʻi’s capitol, it was restored and opened as a museum in 1978.
