Capitol Modern is Hawaii’s state art museum in downtown Honolulu, operating on the second floor of the No. 1 Capitol District Building as part of the state’s Art in Public Places Program. Opened on November 1, 2002, and long known locally as HiSAM, it remains formally the Hawaiʻi State Art Museum after a 2023 rebranding. Its changing exhibitions draw from Hawaii’s Art in Public Places Collection, feature artists connected to the islands, and include annual student art shows. In a compact downtown setting, it serves as the public face of the state museum while bringing Hawaii’s public art collection to a wider audience.
